Planning a Project - 2X Organizational Chart

A contractor would never start to build a facility by trying to design and build a room or two at a time.

You don’t have to have every single detail figured out when you build a new facility to get started and interior details often change over the life cycle of the building.

Leadership Tools: 2X Organizational Chart.

What you do start with is the bigger picture - overall size of the site, facility and key infrastructure.  If it is for a rapidly growing business the facility may be designed as one of many on a larger site or designed for easy expansion down the road.  This is done because we all know that for a facility from need identification until the new facility capacity is built will take a minimum of 18-24 months.

Contractors  must apply that same planning time horizon to their organizational structures.  At the field supervisor level and above the timeline to recruit and / or develop someone into a key position takes a while.  For key management roles it often takes 2+ years for someone to become truly effective in the role.

Many problems including quality issues, margin fade and bad growth can be traced back to the organizational structure.

A third party can be very effective for developing your 2X org chart because they will challenge structure, roles and current team capabilities without bias while bringing in outside expertise.

Talent Development Quote - Jack Welch
From 1981 through 2001 under CEO Jack Welch, GE’s market cap (value) grew 18% compounded annually from $14B to $410B. A large part of this profitable growth was due to the rigor placed on their talent development processes directly from the CEO.
The Teacher and the Student in All of Us
The rate a contractor can grow is the average speed the team learns and teaches at. We are all teachers and we are all students. There are many things that we can do to improve ourselves on both sides of that equation.
Building a Systems Development Team - Starting
Most Systems Development teams start with someone doing report writing or other forms of data extraction and integration, such as creating a dashboard or streamlining through imports.
